Special Donation From A Special Group Of Kids

Mrs. Kathy Nelson’s kindergarten class in Benton, Kentucky saw pictures of the devastation in Cozumel and wanted to help. They took money out of their piggy banks and allowances and donated $90! This may not be one of the biggest donations given but it may one of the best, it came from the heart.

Thank you Kathy and your wonderful, caring students!

"Dear Martin – Hope you are all recovering from the hurricane! When I told my kindergarten class about & showed them photos, they wanted to help. So we collected $90.00 from the children. Some of them took money out of their ‘piggy banks’. Hope this will help your divers & their families!"

Amigos de José

As one leaves the glitter of Cozumel’s tourist zone, the needs of many locals become more visible. Many families find meeting basic survival needs an ongoing challenge. For Cozumel families with a child with severe disabilities, daily life is even more challenging.  These children and their families are invisible to most who visit the island.

In December 2005, Martin introduced us to Jose, a young boy with severe disabilities, and his family.  He’s been the inspiration for the founding of “Amigos de José” which will soon be a US charitable organization. The purpose of Amigos de José is to open the world of communication and learning for Cozumel children who are challenged with severe disabilities. A helping hand is extended to families with limited resources to assist in obtaining the services, supports, equipment and learning materials they need for their children.

Martin and other community members are helping to identify additional children with special needs. We've had several generous monetary donations and will continue to collect donations to support children on a one-by-one basis. In addition to helping the child, we believe in supporting the whole family. Donations beyond what is needed for the child with disabilities go toward meeting the needs of the family as a whole.
